Born and raised in Hong Kong, Chung-wah Chow has dedicated her professional journey to the intricacies of written and spoken word. As a bilingual writer, researcher, and editor, she’s adept at connecting with diverse audiences, specializing in areas of travel, culture, and history.

Since 2006, Chow has co-authored over a dozen Lonely Planet guides, focusing on Hong Kong, Macau, China, and Taiwan. Outside of travel literature, Chow has contributed to various media outlets both locally and internationally, including the likes of BBC, where she was a columnist for their Hong Kong Review from 2009 to 2017, CNN, Hong Kong Economic Journal, Apple Daily and Mingpao Daily.

Her recent research endeavors focus on heritage conservation in Hong Kong. This has culminated in a collection of books—authored, edited, or translated by her—addressing topics like the city’s last surviving dragon kiln, the evolution of building construction in Hong Kong, the intangible heritage of the Hungry Ghosts Festival, and the chronicles of running water. Dive deeper into these projects here.

In addition to her writing and research, Chow co-founded ‘Walk in Hong Kong’ in 2013, a cultural initiative aimed at sharing the city’s stories through walking tours and advocating for heritage conservation.

Chow’s academic background includes an MA in Translation Studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an LL.B. from the University of Hong Kong.

An ardent urban explorer at heart, Chow is constantly in search of the next captivating story hidden within the city’s nooks and crannies. Outside of her professional endeavors, she finds solace in ikebana, chado, and yoga. Chow is a certified Ikenobo Instructor of Ikebana, a trained yoga teacher specializing in Yin Yoga and Sivananda Yoga, and holds an intermediate certification from the Urasenke tradition of Chado.
